Martin Holik on The Ones We Love.http://theoneswelove.net/Martin_Holik“I am standing in a street in Antigua, in a city lying just a few kilometers away from volcano Pacaya. Couple days ago this volcano could endanger lives of ten thousand people. Pacaya has woken up. After several years of silence it was spouting lava again. Nearby villages and cities were evacuated. People had to leave their homes; they left everything behind and ran for safety. Now, it’s quiet here again. Well, relatively quiet. I can still sense the suspense in the air. You can see from people’s faces that it’s not over and it never will be. I can tell it from the way they look at me, how they speak to me. I am just another gringo for them, a tourist passing by. I am a man who has no idea what they have to put up with. I try to understand them, see the situation in their eyes. I can’t express it with words and so I take pictures. A boy with a rugby ball is standing close to me. He is playing with another kid. Where were they a week ago? Did they have to get up and leave their homes? Were they woken up by the evacuation sirens? I don’t know. He looks happy. It’s a beautiful day, he is playing with kids, he has all he needs, yet I can still feel the tension. A few meters from him there are tourists in a restaurant. They are having a good time, enjoying their drinks, perhaps they don’t have a clue what drama happened here few days ago. Local people fascinate me. They are so self-possessed and proud. One can’t really capture this in photographs.”

“(…) I think if they could, they would takeeach other’s arm. It’s early in the morning, and they are doing this thing together.

They come on, slowly. The sky is taking on light, though the moon still hangs pale over the water.
Such beauty that for a minutedeath and ambition, even love, doesn’t enter into this.
Happiness. It comes onunexpectedly. And goes beyond, really, any early morning talk about it.”Raymond Carver

Michèle Pauty on The Ones We Love.http://theoneswelove.net/Michele_Pauty
“When I started to work on the series ‘Female nudes in urban Viennese landscape’ I tried to remind people, especially men, that there is always a person first and yes, this person could also be a naked woman standing somewhere in the middle of the street in Vienna. Still, that’s no reason for any kind of sexual harassment. I did the pictures with a lot of my friends, but also with strangers I approached on the street. I can’t help but admire the women for being confident in themselves and I love the idea of everyone being free.”
